Abstract

The essential oil of Kaffir lime leaves has been studied to inhibit the growth activity of Staphylococcus aureus. This bacterium causes several diseases such as bile, acne, and wound infections. The essential oil of Kaffir lime leaves is formulated in gel preparation form with HPMC as gelling agent and propylene glycol as humectant. This study aims to determine the optimum formula of combination HPMC and propylene glycol as well as the effect of their interaction on the physical properties of gel and antibacterial activity in Staphylococcus aureus. The gel formula was prepared using factorial design with combination HPMC and propylene glycol F1 (10% : 15%), F2 (2% : 2%), F3 (2% : 15%), F4 (10% : 15%), and F5 (10% : 2%) The gel evaluated its physical properties include organoleptis, homogeneity, pH, viscosity, dispersion, adhesiveness and antibacterial activity test. The result data was analyzed using Design Expert 11.0.3.0 (trial) and got the optimum formulation. Variations in concentrations of HPMC and propylene glycol affect the physical properties of the gel. HPMC increases gel adhesiveness while propylenglycol increases the dispersion and gel stickiness. The interaction of HPMC and propylene glycol increases the response of antibacterial activity, adhesion, and viscosity of the gel and decreases the response pH and dispersive power. The optimum formula was obtained on HPMC composition 6.3% and propylene glycol 11.7%.
