Abstract

Swamedication or self treatment is part of the community's efforts to maintain its own health. The purpose of this study is to know the swamedikasi profile and to describe the reasons behind the swamedikasi conducted by students of the University of Muhammadiyah Surakarta. This type of research is quantitative observational with cross-sectional data collection through interviews and provide questionnaires to respondents. The population in this study is a student of Faculty of Engineering Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta, amounting to 456 people. The sample in this study amounted to 82 respondents. Data analysis technique with percentage analysis technique. The results of the study showed that the majority of respondents conducted swamedikasi done by women (55,3%) while men (44,7%), 3 types of the most frequent illness are flu (24,7%), headache (17, 61%), and fever (16.42%). As many as 61.2% of respondents have followed the method and rules of drug use, (86%) of respondents buy drugs in pharmacies and there are 23.5% of respondents experiencing drug side effects of drowsiness. While the reasons for swamedikasi because it considers minor illness as much as 25.8%, advertising 17.6%, experience 16.4%, 14.7% cheaper, educate from friends 14.7%, 11.7% faster.
