Abstract

This research paper analyzes Edward Albee’s The Zoo Story especially in its one of major character, Jerry because this literary work shows personality disorder of this character. It has four problems and those arranged as follows: (1) What are the characteristics of Borderline Personality Disorder as shown in the character of Jerry?, (2) What typical thoughts or beliefs that make Jerry categorized as a borderline person?, (3) What conditions that make Jerry has Borderline Personality Disorder?, (4) What are the effects of Borderline Personality Disorder as shown in the character of Jerry?. The aim of this research is finding the answers of those four questions and they are:(1) To identify the characteristics of Borderline Personality Disorder as shown in the character of Jerry, (2) To find out the typical thoughts or beliefs that make Jerry categorized as a Borderline person, (3) To elaborate the causes of Borderline Personality Disorder, (4) To explain the effects of Borderline Personality Disorder as shown in the character of Jerry. In analyzing this study, the researcher uses qualitative method with the text of the conversation in The Zoo Story playscript as the object. There are two sources of data. The first is primary data source which consists of The Zoo Story playscript written by Edward Albee in 1958 and the second are other datas that have relation with the research includes books, homepages, and journals of personality disorder and behaviorism. After doing the research by using library research and document analysis, she finds the result that the characteristics of Jerry as borderline person can be seen by his instability of relationships, emotions, and self-image. He also has fears of abandonment, and then aggressive, too. He is proneness to self-harm and the last is strong emotions. His typical thoughts or beliefs also same with borderline person that he hates and loves at the same person, and he does not want to be left alone. If someone whom he hates and loves, leaves him, he will kill himself, and it really occurs. He becomes borderline person because he has an early loss of love from his parents and family. And the effect of his personality disorder is self mutilation or self destructive, and he does suicide when he wants the other character, Peter to share his bench. He losses his life just because of the bench in the park.
