Abstract

Breast cancer is one of the deadly diseases that can affect humans, especially in women. The various cancer treatments can cause side effects. The aim of this study was to investigate the cytotoxic activity of ethanol extract of Jatropha curcas root, stem bark, and seeds against T47D breast cancer cells and identify the compouns in each extract. Jatropha curcas root, stem bark, and seeds were macerated using 96% ethanol. The viscous extracts obtained were tested their cytotoxicity by using MTT assay method. Thin layer chromatography (TLC) was conducting using silica GF 254 as a stationary phase and the mobile phase for root, bark and seed were n-butanol:acetic acid:water (4:1:5), n-hexane:ethyl acetate (7:3), and n-hexane:chloroform (5:5), respectively. The results showed that ethanol extracts of root and stem bark have cytotoxic activity with IC50 value of 265.83 μg/ml and >1000 μg/ml, respectively. TLC results showed that ethanol extract of jatropha root contain alkaloid, saponin, and phenolic compound. The compounds that were identified in Jatropha bark were alkaloid, saponin, terpenoid, phenolic, and flavonoid. Jatropha seeds contain saponin.
