Abstract

This study aims to examine the hardness, microstructure and chemical composition of bayonet products by modifying the brass bermaterial system of 130mm width changing to 100mm with a casting weight of at least 10kg. The main material used is recycled brass material and brass scrap. Metal brass using sand casting technique. Brinell hardness test is used to know hardness value of brass material with indenter of steel ball diameter 10mm main load 3000kg. to see the microstructure used metal optical microscope with enlargement reached 200 times. Spectrometer testing is used to determine the chemical composition contained in the brass material. the results of this study indicate that the brass material has a mean hardness of 86.80 HB and the microstructure of the specimen part of the visible phase β more dominate than the phase α so it has a high strength. The results of chemical compositions in brass materials include Cu 62.0%; Zn 32.2%; 2.80%; Sn 1.32% and other elements below 1%. Based on these data it can be concluded that the brass maerial has a high hardness level, because there is a phase α + β and 32.2% Zn combination which where has high strength but can not be done, but can only be for alloy castings.
