Abstract

There are many methods of Liquid State Welding. It have been used in industries to meet various needs. One of the often used method is TIG welding. The weld method is able to reduce excessive heat in the workpiece because it has an inert gas argon that serves as a protective gas and coolant. It can reduce the reaction between non-ferrous material and air. The reaction can cause large porosity and develop dross material in the welding zone. The objectives of this study are to investigate the welding strength and micro structure of the joint. Tensile test and micro photograph are conducted for the types of specimens T-joint and Butt joint. In this research, the welding process was conducted on the same material of aluminum pipe with the diameter of 22.2 mm and 1.6 mm thick by using TIG Argon Welding method. The welding was done with added aluminium alloy. In tensile test results, the T-joint has an average tensile stress of 38.6 N / mm2 and a mean strain yield of 12%. The tensile test of the butt joint has an average stress of 40.3 N / mm2 and the average strain of 10.23%. The microstructure investigation in the weld zone, the grain size was bigger than the base metal, this is due to differences in material content Keywords: TIG argon welding, welding of aluminum, T-joint, Butt joint
