Abstract

The potential of wind energy in Indonesia is 970 MW, but the installed capacity of 1.96 MW. Therefore, it is necessary to develop wind turbine technology. One wind turbine that can be developed is a wind turbine type Counter Rotating Wind Turbine (CRWT). This study aims to determine the effect of axial distance ratios on CRWT performance This research used experimental method by varying the axial distance between the front and rear rotor. The ratio of axial distance is the distance between the rotor divided by the rotor diameter (X / D). The axial distance ratio used was 0.05 to 0.30 with a multiple of 0.05. Thus, it is possible to know the ratio of the most optimal axial distance to CRWT. The design of rotor diameter is 1 m, using NREL S826 airfoil and TSR (Tip Speed Ratio) is 6. Turbine tested with wind speed 3.5 m/s and 4 m/s. The results of this study indicates that the variation of the axial distance ratio on CRWT has a significant influence on the second rotation of the rotor, the power generated and the coefficient of power. the optimum axial distance ratio of the rotors is 0.05
