Abstract

The objectives of the research are to describe: 1) the language error in writing descriptive paragraph; 2) the factors affecting students’ language errors in writing descriptive paragraph; and 3) the efforts undertaken by teachers to overcome the students’ language errors in writing descriptive paragraph of VII th grade students at SMP Negeri 2 Weru, Sukoharjo. The type of the research is qualitative research employing case study design. The research was done at SMP Negeri 2 Weru, Sukoharjo. The data collecting methods were done using in-depth interview, observation and document techniques. The data analysis was done using interactive model comprising three main components, namely: data reduction, data display, and verification. The data validation was done using triangulation technique. Based on the analysis, the research concludes that: (1) the language error in writing descriptive paragraph of the students were the use of capitalization, conjunctions, afixations, prepositions, and spelling. Other errors were the students’ misconception on texts’ types. Students could not differentiate between the narrative and descriptive texts; 2) the factors affecting students’ language errors in writing descriptive paragraph were the students’ comprehension about the language rules for they did not exercise well in writing and reading. Other factor was the inferrention of mother tongue language rules; and 3) the efforts undertaken by teachers to overcome the students’ language errors in writing descriptive paragraph of VIIth grade students at SMP Negeri 2 Weru, Sukoharjo were providing the materials concerning language rules more intensive and assigning student to write and read books to improve their knowledge. The students’ writing were discussed by empowering students using peer correction technique.
