Abstract

Paving block is a building material composition made from a mixture of portland cement or similar hydrolytic adhesive, water and aggregate with or without other additives which does not reduce the quality of the concrete itself (SNI 03-0691,19). 96The current paving block is widely used by the community as a building construction, especially for pavement roads, yards, sidewalks, parking lots and others. Paving blocks are widely used because they can withstand loads within certain limits and are easy in mounting jobs. In addition to these advantages, paving block is better than other pavement in terms of economic maintenance, the artistic facade of a building exterior, does not require heavy equipment, and can be mass produced, also when viewed in terms of environmental sustainability as water absorption system. Today's paving block structure has changed significantly since paving block is only rectangular, but now there are variations of paving block making starting from dekopave, diamond, interpave, dogbone, siera, quatro, and others. Cement is the main material the most influential in hardening and binding on paving blocks. When the cement is mixed with water then the chemical process will take place called the hydration process. From chemical reactions of tricalcium silicate (C3S) and calcium silicate (C2S) cement with water to produce hybrid calcium silicate (CSH), heat, and calcium hydroxide (Ca (OH) 2). (Ca (OH) 2) produced will cause the concrete pore solution is strong base and insoluble in water so it can reduce the compressive strength of the concrete. Paving blocks used as specimens using Hydraulic Press machine with cement variation of 1: 4, 1: 6, 1: 8 ratio on each test specimen and then watered in the morning and afternoon for maintenance for 21 days. Given a mixture of Paving Block on a variation of this 1: 4 mixture, the maximum compressive strength is found in the mixed variation of 1: 4 is 10,019 MPa with minimum water absorption of 9.734%.
