Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe the improvement of students' mathematics motivation and achievement through learning strategy of Poblem Based Instruction (PBI) on the students of class VIIID State Junior Secondary School 2 Banyudono Academic Year 2016/2017. The type of research is a classroom action research (CAR) consisting of two cycles. The first cycle consists of two meetings and the second cycle consists of one meeting. Teacher and student data sources. Techniques of collecting observation data, tests, documentation, and field notes. Research subjects that were subjected to the action were students of class VIIID State Junior Secondary School 2 Banyudono totaling 32 students. Data analyzed by using comparative descriptive analysis that is comparing test value of initial condition, cycle I, and cycle II. The result of the research shows that there is an increase of students' mathematics motivation and achievement which can be seen from the improvement of the indicators, covering: (a) students facing the task (can work continuously for long time) from the initial condition 53.13% and the final condition 75.00%; (b) toughness facing difficulties (no immediate despair) initial condition 46.88% and final condition 71.88%; (c) prefer to work independently (do not ask other group) initial condition 40.63% and final conditions 65.36%. This can be seen from the percentage of students' mathematics learning achievement in the initial condition of 43.75% and the final condition of 84.38%. The conclusion of this research is the implementation of Problem Based Instruction strategy can improve the motivation and achievement of student's mathematics learning.
