Abstract

ABSTRACT The study is about representation of stereotype of Tionghoa ethnic in film. The film used as object in this research is Ngenest. Stereotype depiction of Tionghoa ethnic in the film is potrayed as cunning ethnic, exclusivity, and thrifty as well as some of the stereotype about their culture, social class to physical or racial of Tionghoa ethnic. Tionghoa ethnic are not a native ethnic in Indonesia but they are ethnic settlers estimated to exist since the 9th Century. Research methods is descriptive qualitative approach and uses the methods of Rolland Barthes semotic analysis. By analyzing the scenes in the film which show stereotype Tionghoa ethnic. Then the data obtained were analyzed through the denotative aspect and connotative as well as myth. The result shows that the representation of Tionghoa ethnic stereotypes in the film of Ngenest as the scheming, thrifty and exclusive and different from the natives in terms of their social class, cultural and physical characteristics. All representation of Tionghoa ethnic in the film is shown with the verbal and nonverbal. Key Word : Representation, Semiotic, Stereotype, Tionghoa
