Abstract

The research aims (1) to identify at the reading strategies applied by the tenth grade students in understanding narrative text at SMA KEBAKKRAMAT in 2014/2015 Academic Year, (2) to identify students difficulties in understanding narrative text at SMA KEBAKKRAMAT in 2014/2015 Academic Year. This study is descriptive qualitative research. The tenth grade students of SMA KEBAKKRAMAT and the English teacher are the subject of this research. The data collection of this research are interview, observation, and document. From this research, the researcher found that (1) the reading strategies in understanding narrative text applied by the tenth grade students of SMA KEBAKKRAMAT in 2014/2015 Academic Year are follows: previewing, predicting, skimming, and scanning. Previewing strategies is to find the idea of the whole direction of the text. Predicting strategies is to predict what will happen on the next text. Skimming strategies is to find main idea or general idea in each paragraph. Then scanning strategies is to discover the detailed information, (2) students difficulties in understanding narrative text at SMA KEBAKKRAMAT in 2014/2015 Academic Year are low motivation, and limited vocabulary.
