Abstract

Harmonic is a periodic distortion of the sine wave voltage, current or power waveform whose frequency is a multiple outside number one to the fundamental frequency. Harmonics are caused by non-linear loads. These expenses resulting from the non-linear electronic tools that have a lot of semi-conductor components, such as welding machines, magnetic core in the transformer and machinery - spinning machines and many more. The harmonic waves will ride on a pure sine wave (the fundamental frequency) so that the defects will form wave (distortion) which is the sum of pure sine wave with harmonic waves. The percentage of total harmonic component to fundamental component is called the total harmonic distortion (THD). From the observation of the welding machine caused high THD, thus causing damage to other electronic equipment and lower the power factor. Therefore, researches are interested in conducting research on the THD welded machine generated and aims to lower the value of the THD by designing a passive filter. The first step that can be done after knowing much the total harmonic distortion (THD) of a welding machine is to perform calculations to determine the amount of resistors, inductors and capacitors. Assembling a filter made after doing the calculations of the values of each components of the filter. Filters passive installed in parallel to the welding power and then in test using a power quality analyzer. In this study the values obtained at 0.13 Ω resistor, inductor for is 0.011 x H H and a capacitor of 9.7 x F. Total harmonic distortion (THD) of current and voltage before installation of filters by 408.57% and 6.94%. After installation of the filter total harmonic distortion (THD) of current and voltage amounted to 14.43% and 4: %. There was a decrease in total harmonic distortion (THD) of current and voltage amounted to 394.14% and 2.82%. Passive filter mounted on a welding machine to reduce total harmonic distortion (THD) works quite well.
