Abstract

This research is conducted to evaluate the environment carrying capacity based on land capability in Sleman Regency. The research aims to understand the suitability of the existing land use in 2017 to the Regional Spatial Planning (Rencana Tata Ruang Wilayah - RTRW) 2011 – 2031 document; to understand the land capability in Sleman Regency; to understand the suitability of both actual and planned land use stipulated in the RTRW document to the land capability, and finally to provide a recommendation on land use that suitably match to the environment carrying capacity. Qualitatif method using the arithmetic matching method and descriptive analysis are used to define land capability class in this research. Various variables were put into account in determining land capability class in Sleman Regency such as land slope angel, soil texture, soil permeability, soil drainage, solum thickness, soil susceptibility to erosion, as well as degree of soil erosion. Descriptive analysis is used to formulate a recommendation on land use that is suitable to the environment carrying capacity. The conclusion drawn from the research among others: the actual land use suitability to the land use planning stipulated in RTRW 2011 – 2013 covers an area of 53,813.66 hectares (93.40%) while those in not-suitable category measures 3,800.21 hectares (6.60%) which is located in Subdistrict of Depok, Gamping and Mlati; land capability class I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII as well as VIII exist in Sleman Regency; suitability of both actual and planned land use stipulated in RTRW 2011 – 2013 to the environment carrying capacity in Kabupaten Sleman reaches 18,917.16 hectares (32.81%), those of suitable-with-condition category covers 38,442.48 hectares, while an area of 288.92 hectares (0.50%) is categorized as not suitable at land capability class VI, VII, as well as VIII in Pakem and Prambanan Subdistrict and this research recommends that current land use that is suitable to environment carrying capacity is to be maintained. While conservation efforts are needed for the land use in suitable-with-condition category, it is recommended that those of not-suitable category particularly ones in the land capability class VI and VII to be converted into preservation area.
