Abstract

Mouthwash has side effects that can damage the oral cavity if not used properly. One of options to reduce these side effects was by using medicinal plants namely red pomegranate (Punica granatum L.). However, the effectivity of mouthwash could be affected by its shelf life which cause oxidation. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of red pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) flower extract mouthwash shelf life to the oxidation. This study was purely laboratory experimental with posttest only control group design. The formulation of the mouthwash used a 0.2% red pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) flower extract packed in dark glass bottles stored in a climate chamber at 25ºC and humidity 58%. The sample was divided into 5 groups, i.e. the group without shelf life, the group with the shelf life of 7 days, 14 days, 21 days and 28 days. The mean value of absorbance group without shelf life, 7 days, 14 days, 21 days and 28 days shelf life increased respectively 0.4154, 0.4168, 0.4172, 0.4238 and 0.4258. One way ANOVA test showed a significant difference with the value of p = 0,038 (p <0,05). The results of Post Hoc test were 0,712; 0,635; 0,036; 0,011 (p<0,05). The conclusion of this study was that the red pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) flower extract mouthwash shelf life has no significant effect to the oxidation process during 14 days shelf life.
