Abstract

Rice husk is an agricultural waste that is commonly found in Indonesia.But until now the utilization is still less than optimal.This research was conducted to utilize rice husk waste to further improve that has higher value, by creating new material in the form of cement-husk composite. This composite uses cement as a binder and rice husk as its filler fiber. The variation of the research used is the difference of rice husk particle size , such are mesh 10, 20, 30, and 40. While the composite mass composition of all variations are same, the mass comparison of Portland Gresik cement and rice husk 70%:30%. The process of forming used manual method without pressure treatment. The test conducted include testing of compressive strength and water absorption capability. The research uses standard reference of SNI test (Indonesia National Standard) that is SNI-13-6825-2002 for compressive strength test and SNI-03-0349-1989 for water absorption test. The test was performed after 28 days old composite. From the test results obtained the largest compressive strength on the mesh 40 variation of 1.72 N/mm2 and the smallest in the mesh variation of 10 that is equal to 0.29 N/mm2. While the largest water absorption capacity is owned by composites with particle size of rice husk mesh 40 is 48.45%. The conclusios that can be drawn on this research are rice husk particles affecting compressive strength and water absorption abillity of coposite. The smaller particle size,it will better for its copressive strength. Otherwise, water absorption capacity will decrease and it is good for coposite structures.
