Abstract

In every lecture activity that take place in a classroom within FKI UMS, ACs (air conditoners) are always used. It was often found that when the lecture had finished the ACs were still turned on. This could lead to waste of electricity. Since there are dozens of air conditioners, it is not easy to control them one by one manually. This fact led to the idea of developing an AC remote control system utilizing the campus wifi network as the connectivity infrastructure, Raspberry Pi as the control device as well as the web server, and smartphone or computer as the provider of user interface. The course of this research follows the steps defined in the prototyping method, namely requirement analysis, prototype development and prototype testing. The resulting hardware circuit consists of Raspberry Pi 3 equipped with IR receiver HX1838 for recording IR code from AC remote control, 5 mm LED IR transmitter for transmitting the recorded IR code to AC, LDR for detecting the life or death of the AC power light, and temperature sensor DS18B20 for measuring room temperature. The software used consists of Raspbian as the operating system, LIRC for infrared signal resource utilization, Python 3 for programming in Python, Apache as the web server, Mysql as the database manager, and PHP5 for web page creation. The resulting user interface is a web page that provides buttons like those on the AC remote control, plus information about AC status and room temperature. From the test results, the longest distance that can be reached by IR transmitter in sending IR code is 4 meter. All buttons and information displays on the user interface have been working according to their specified functions. The timer feature is working, but its function is still limited.
