Abstract

The objective of the research is to find whether audiovisual aids can improve the students’ vocabulary, especially in pronunciation, meaning, and concept of meaning. Besides, the research is also designed to solve some problems encountered by the first C students of SD Birrul Walidain Muhammadiyah Sragen in mastering English vocabulary. This is a descriptive qualitative research. The writer applies Classroom Action Research which requires four steps, namely planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. The subject of the research is the first year students of SD Birrul Walidain Muhammadiyah Sragen which consists of 23 students. The methods of collecting data are test (pre and post test), observation, and interview. To analyze the quantitative data the writer applied descriptive comparative technique while to analyze qualitative data she applied critic analytic technique. The result of this research shows that teaching vocabulary using audiovisual aids can improve the students’ vocabulary, it is proved by the improvement of the students’ mean score. The mean score of written pre-test is 58 while the post-test score is 93. Whereas the mean score of oral pre-test is 82 and the post-test is 91. In addition, the students also feel interested in learning vocabulary using audiovisual aids, because they can watch the image of the object in the form of cartoon video while listening to pronunciation from the native speaker.
