Abstract

Prevention and control of dental caries caused by Streptococcus mutans is done in two ways, namely mechanical and chemical. The use of a toothbrush is a mechanical means combined with a chemical agent in the form of toothpaste. Turi flower (Sesbania grandiflora L.) is the recommended active compound for dentifrice preparations. This herbal compound has various properties such as antibacterial agent for Streptococcus mutans. The aim of this research is to make a toothpaste formula with combination of turi flower extract and Na CMC (Natrium Carboxy Methyl Cellulose) and to know the activity of turi flower on Streptococcus mutans after formulated in dentifrice preparation. Turi flower extract is done by maceration method. Toothpaste formulation consisted of four formulas with variation of Na CMC concentration and turi flower extract with comparison of each formula that is F1 (Na CMC 3%, 10% extract), F2 (Na CMC 3%, 5% extract), F3 (Na CMC 1%, 5% extract), F4 (Na CMC 1%, 10% extract). Testing the physical properties of toothpastes include: organoleptis testing, pH, viscosity, and formation of foam with data processing using ANOVA test. Streptococcus mutans activity test was performed by disk method, erythromycin as positive control and DMSO as negative control. The result of this research is extract of ethanol of turi flower as much as 114,87 g with yield of 9,57% w/w. The test results of toothpaste physical properties have met the requirements for toothpastes include: pH (4.5-10,5), viscosity (100-1000 dPas), foam formation (formed). The results of antibacterial test of toothpaste to Streptococcus mutans bacteria have not been proven with certainty that toothpaste extract of ethanol turi flower has inhibitory activity against growth of Streptococcus mutans bacteria. The best formula according to the results of this study is formula 3 with 5% of extract and 3% of Na CMC for weight of 100 g toothpaste.
