Abstract

This study is aimed to know the effectiveness of teaching vocabulary using English songs and hand puppets at Elementary School. Specially it is to describe the procedure, the effectiveness, and the strength and weaknesses of teaching vocabulary using English songs and hand puppets. The study was conducted in SD N Gentan 02 Baki, Sukoharjo using experimental study. The writer took 21 students of the fourth year students class B as the subject of the research. The writer uses pre-test and post-test to estimate the effectiveness of teaching vocabulary using English songs and hand puppets. In pretest, the highest score is 27, the lowest score is 11, and the average score is 18,5. In the post-test, the highest score is 29, the lowest score is 11, and the average score is 20,4. The t value of the computation post-test is 20.4 and pre-test is 18,5. The t value of table at 0,05 level of significance for degree is 2,080. It shows that the t value is lager than t table. Based on the analysis the writer sees that t calculate posttest is lager than t calculate pre-test or 20,4 is lager than 18,5 so it can be conclude that teaching vocabulary using songs and hand puppets is effective. The combinations of hand puppets and songs as an alternative technique of teaching vocabulary at Elementary School have weaknesses as well as strengths. The weaknesses are the teacher gets difficulty to find simple and familiar songs, which are easily understood by the students, then teacher also needs more energy and time. The strengths are the students can remember and memorize the words/phrases easily by singing a song. In addition, the students do not get bored easily because they enjoy the hand puppets performance.
