Abstract

Bacillus cereus is the most common cause of two clinical symptoms of diarrhea and vomiting in meat-based food poisoning. Bacillus cereus produces diarrhea-causing enterotoxins that are more toxic than other types of bacterial intoxication. In addition Bacillus cereus can also lead to other more dangerous infections such as non gastroinstetinal infections, respiratory infections, nosocomial infections, central nervous system infections, urinary tract infections, skin infections, endocarditis, and osteomyelitis. Bacillus cereus is resistant to the β-lactam and cephalosporin antibiotics because it produces the β-lactamase enzyme. The purpose of this research were to investigate the antibacterial activity of ethanol extract 70% avocado leaf, bamboo leaf, starfruit leaf, heart leaf, eucalyptus leaf, longan leaf, singapore cherry leaf, rambutan leaf, bay leaf and breadfruit leaf to Bacillus cereus, Contained in plant leaf extracts that have the highest antibacterial activity against Bacillus cereus. Extraction of plant leaves were carried out using ethanol 70% with maceration method. Test of antibacterial activity against Bacillus cereus was done using disk diffusion method. Groups of compounds contained in plant leaf extracts that have the highest antibacterial activity were identified using thin layer chromatography (TLC), and compounds that have antibacterial activity was detected using bioautographic tests. The results of antibacterial activity test showed that all leaf extracts had antibacterial activity against Bacillus cereus, except bamboo leaf extract. The avocado leaf (Persea americana) has the highest antibacterial activity with diameter of inhibition zone of 12.6 ± 2.88 mm. Compound in avocado leaf extracts were alkaloids, saponins, terpenoids, polyphenols, and tannins. Compounds that were suspected to have antibacterial activity against Bacillus cereus were saponins, terpenoids, polyphenols, and tannins.
