Abstract

The mangosteen pericarpium contains xanthones compounds that can inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus epidermidis that cause acne. However, the use of botanicals traditionally be considered less practical. Topical dosage form like gel is suitable for more practical usage. It is necessary to experiment to find the right formulation that has the properties and deliver the active substance to the fullest. This study aims to determine the composition of gelling agent carbomer 934 and HPMC in gel ethanolic extract of mangosteen pericarpium to produce the optimum formula with good physical properties. The experiment of optimization formula is to find the composition of the gelling agent carbomer 934 and HPMC using factorial design method on Design Expert® Stat-Ease software. The result of optimum formula verified by the trial and analyzed by using one sample t-test method on IBM SPSS® Statistics software with 95% independence level. Stability of the optimum formula tested with freeze and thaw method and analyzed by using paired sample t-test method on IBM SPSS® Statistics software. The optimization test result gel with the optimum formula having carbomer 934 1.19% and HPMC 0.5%. The result of verification test the optimum prediction formula and optimum experimental formula is differently not significant. The results of the stability test of the optimum formula showed that the significance value of viscosity 0.034, adhesion 0.002, dispersive power 0.014 and antibacterial power 0.034. Therefore, the preparation of optimum formula after freeze and thaw test of 3 cycles is not stable or significantly different with optimum formula before freeze & thaw. The result of antibacterial test can be concluded that optimum formula of gel ethanolic extract of mangosteen pericarpium has resistance to Staphylococcus epidermidis bacteria with medium category.
