Abstract

This research aims at knowing the effect of contextual teaching and learning on students’ ability in learning English. The researcher conducted the research at MIN Tinawas Nogosari Boyolali. The problem statements are “is there a significant difference in the result of teaching English using traditional method and CTL seen from the result pre-test and post-test, and does teaching English using CTL give better result than teaching English using traditional method. The objectives of this research are to know the significant difference in the result of teaching English using traditional method and CTL, and to find out whether teaching English using CTL give better result than teaching English by using traditional method. Type of research that is used by the writer is pre-experiment research. In this research, the data are the result of pre-test and post test (the student’s score). The subject of the study is students of fourth year in MIN Tinawas. The object of the study is the effect of CTL on students’ ability in learning English. The method of collecting data is test. A test can be considered as a good test if they fulfill the requirements as the measuring tool (Joko Nurkamto, 2005 :18). The requirements are validity and reliability. The result of analysis shows that there is a significant difference in the result of teaching English before and after using CTL. The mean score is measured from difference of post test and pre test that is 2,07. The questions of test are valid and reliable, because rxy > rtable (0,381). It is found that to >ttable = 30,396 > 1,706 this hypothesis is accepted. So, teaching english using CTL gives better result than teaching english using traditional method. The students are also easier to understand the vocabulary because the material taught are connected with the situasion at that time.
