Abstract

This research is about threatening utterance in English translation of Al-Qur’an part 30. The objectives of this research are to describe the pragmatic meaning and to know the reason of threatening utterance applied in English translation of Al- Qur’an part 30. The type of this research is descriptive qualitative research. The method of collecting data is documentation, and the steps are reading, classifying and coding the data of threatening utterances. The five steps are carried out to analyze the data. In analyzing the threatening utterance, the steps are: finding the main idea, analyzing the context, connecting the meaning and context, applying pragmatics study deals with speech Act to identify the intention, and finally finding the reason by using Hymes’s context of speech situation theory. The result of the study shows the variety pragmatics meaning of threatening utterance in English translation of Al-Qur’an and the reason of threatening utterance applied in Al-Qur’an. The intentions of threatening utterance are to threat, to warn, to explain, to inform, to assert, to motivate, to advice, to deny and to replay. The reason of threatening utterance applied in Al-Qur’an are; showing the most merciful and the most beneficent, showing the Al- Mighty, showing the All Knower of Everything, showing the Great Fair and showing the Perfectly Wise. By uttering the threatening utterances, Allah prohibits His servants to do any kinds of evil deeds or sins and commends them to do the obligation as a Moslem.
