Abstract

The research studies learning strategies used by the students of elementary school at the fourth year of SDN 2 Genengsari Toroh Grobogan in mastering vocabulary. The type of this research is case study which aims to describe the fourth year students learning strategies in mastering vocabulary. The methods of collecting the data are observation, interview, and documentation. The data are taken from the students of the research in the form of the field notes, interview, and document. The result of this research shows that they use three kinds of learning strategies: metacognitive strategies, cognitive strategies, and social-affective strategies. Metacognitive strategies cover direct attention, self evaluation, and delayed production. While cognitive strategies involve repetition, note taking, imagery and inferencing. The last, the subject uses two types of social affective strategies. They are cooperation and question for clarification. Each of them modifies each other. Totally, they apply nine strategies in mastering vocabulary. Most of learning strategies employed is full of consciousness. As elementary school students, they like applying these strategies in mastering vocabulary. On this occasion English is a foreign language that needs full concentration and awareness. Thus, the writer can conclude that three kinds of those strategies are applied consciously in learning strategies.
