Abstract

This research paper is aimed at answering: (1) the objectives of teaching listening by using multimedia to the first year students of SMK N 4 Surakarta 2008/2009 academic year, (2) the materials used in teaching listening by using multimedia, (3) the activities done in teaching listening by using multimedia, (4) the teacher’s and students’ problems in teaching learning listening and the problem solving. In analyzing teaching implementation, the writer uses qualitative method. The object of the study is the implementation of teaching listening. The data sources are event, informant and document related to teaching listening. The technique of data analysis used in this study is descriptive analysis. It deals with reducing the data, displaying the data and drawing conclusion. The result of this study shows that (1) the objective of teaching listening using multimedia is increasing the students’ ability in learning English, (2) the syllabus used in teaching listening is topical syllabus, (3) the material of teaching listening is taken from Learn to Speak English software. It is included in off line technology. LTS courseware is included in instructional paradigm category, (4) the problems faced by the teacher in teaching listening using multimedia. The first is error program, to solve it the teacher restart the computer. The second is students’ ability in listening to the native speaker voice. The teacher plays the listening material more than once. The third is students’ passive habit. The way out of this phenomenon is encourage the students (5) the students got difficulties in understanding the vocabulary, adapting with native speakers’ speed and understanding grammar rule.
