Abstract

In general, water adversely affects pavement construction. Puddle can be caused by high rainfall, poor drainage system, high groundwater level, and water runoff in swamp areas. The AC-BC layer (Asphalt Concrete-Binder Course) is the intermediate layer that holds the maximum load on the surface layer due to traffic so that a mixture with a minimum stability strength of 800 kg (Bina Marga, 2010). The AC-BC mixture uses a continuous graded type that has a high degree of rigidity. The common damage experienced by the AC-BC mixture is the cracking and discharge of the grains. Based on the results of the study before is concluded that this mixture requires improvement in the flexibility and durability. The influence of water on the pavement is related to durability and Marshall properties that usually tend to decrease. The research was conducted in the Laboratory of Pavement Material University Muhammadiyah of Surakarta with variation of asphalt content of 4%, 4.5%, 5%, 5.5%, 6%, 6.5% and 7% to total aggregate weight to determine optimum bitumen content. The value of optimum bitumen content is determined by means of the Arrow Range method of the existing Marshall parameters has obtained the optimum bitumen content 5,424%. Subsequently preparing the specimen for standard immersion at 0.5 hour and 24-hours immersion duration, while for modified immersion using a variation of the length of the immersion 48 hours, 96 hours and 168 hours. Then Marshall testing and durability analysis consist of Index of Retained Strength (IRS), First Durability Index (FDI) and Secondary Durability Index (SDI). The results showed that value of IRS immersion 24 hours is 94.51% with a minimum requirement of 90%, considered quite durable based on the value of IRS. IDP value continues to grow up to a value of 0.947% <1% so it is quite durable at 96 hours of immersion. Total IDK value for 168 hours of immersion is 14.03% with an immersion time limit of 88.07 hours. The immersion influence on the Marshall properties on the stability, VIM, and VMA parameters tended to increase, whereas in the VFWA, flow and MQ has decreased trend during the immersion period. The influence of the immersion period on Marshall properties parameters shows that Marshall properties have a critical time at 91.2 hours.
