Abstract

The research aims at finding out and describes the learning strategies used by the second semester students of Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta in writing skill. The subjects of this research are the fifteen students chosen based on the score of writing subject. The methods of collecting data are interview, observation and documentation. The result of this research shows that the three groups use almost all the learning strategies proposed by O’malley and Chamot. However their attention in learning is different. Group I (S1) uses twelve strategies which consist of 6 in metacognitive strategy; advance organizer, directive attention, selective attention, self management, self monitoring and self evaluation, 4 in cognitive strategies; repetition, resourcing, note taking, deduction, and 2 in social affective strategies, namely question for clarification and cooperation. Group II (S2) uses nine strategies which consist of 4 metacognitive strategies; advance organizer, directive attention, self management and self evaluation, 3 in cognitive strategies repetition, resourcing, and translation, 2 in social affective strategies, namely question for clarification and cooperation. And group III (S3) uses six strategies which consist of two metacognitive strategies; directed attention and self management, two in cognitive strategies that is resourcing and translation, and two in social affective strategies; question for clarification and cooperation. Of the three groups, group I (S1), the students who has high mark in writing subject uses the highest number of learning strategies proposed by O’malley and Chamot. That group is more successful than group II (S2) and group III (S3).
