Abstract

Al-Quran is the Muslim scripture which is used as a source of Islamic tenet and the source of all knowledge those are used as a basis of Islamic education. In Islamic education process, the source of all knowledgeare taken from the verses of al-Quran. SMP Muhammadiyah 7 Surakarta as the educational institution is implementing the compulsory program for students, namely being able to read Quran. So, to achieve the goal, SMP Muhammadiyah 7 Surakarta through Islamic Education teacher makes several attempts to overcome the difficulties of reading the Quran. To overcome the difficulties of reading Quran, the Islamic education teachers has the role and responsibility of it, which served to foster and monitor the progress of their students in the ability to read the Qur'an. The problems of this research are(1) what are the roles ofIslamiceducation teacher in overcoming the studentsdifficulties in reading Quran, and (2) what are the difficulties of learning Quran and the solutionsto deal with them? Based on the background of the study, this research aims to describe the role of an Islamic education teacher in overcoming the students difficulties in reading Quran and to identify the difficulties of learning Quran and the solutionsto deal with them. This research is included in field research because the data are collected by directly writing at the place. The data are collected by using interview, observation, and documentation,while the data are analyzed by descriptive qualitative way, in narrative form through the process of data collection, data reduction, data presentation, conclusion, and verification. Withdrawal conclusions are conductedin inductive method. The results of this research concludes that the attempt to overcome the difficulties of reading the Quran cannot be separated from the role of Islamic teacher as a demonstrator, classmanager, mediator/facilitator, or evaluator in achieving the learning of Quran conducted gradually, stage 1 Iqrā’ for VII grade, stage 2 Quran for VIII grade, and stage 3 Tafhīmul Qurān for IX grade. The difficulties are the differences of students ability, unsupported family, the lack of student awareness,and limited hours of lessons, and the solutions to overcome them arethrough the learning objectives, learning materials, students who love and have enthusiasm for learning and being fluent in reading the Quran, teachers, strategy / learning methods, media, and evaluation.
