Abstract

The problem of this study is to reveal how the major character reflects his anxiety. The objective of the study is to analyze novel based on its structural elements and based on psychoanalytic literal analysis. This study is descriptive qualitative study. The object of this study is Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Marble Faun published in 1995 in London by Everyman. The data sources are divided into two, namely primary and secondary data source. The primary data source is the novel itself and secondary data source is the other sources related to the analysis such as references, author’s biography, criticism related the problems and material related to the study whether picking up from books and internet related to the analysis of the novel. Techniques of data collection are documentation and library research. The technique of data analysis is descriptive analysis. The result of this study is as follows. Firstly, it describes how anxiety reflects on one of the major character’s personality, Donatello. Secondly, the psychoanalytic analysis shows that anxiety develops out of a conflict between the push of the id instincts and the threat of punishment by the superego.
