Abstract

Preleminary design of ethyl chloride using ethanol hydrochlorination is to meet the need of ethyl chloride in Indonesia and the possibility to be exported. Ethyl chloride is produced by reaction between ethanol and hydrochloric acid. The production process is done in a Fixed Bed Reactor Multi Tube. Ethyl chloride is going to be produced with a capacity of 40,000 tones per years in Cilegon, West Java. It is used for ethyl cellulose to improve the elasticity of the plastic, ethyl aluminum to produce catalysts zieger, and as a industrial solvent. The reaction takes place in the gas phase, with a temperature of 325ºC and a pressure of 6 atm. Reaction formation of ethyl chloride produces 94.7% of the total product conversion. The plant of ethyl chloride is feeded with ethanol 3,570.9740 kg per hour, and hydrochloric acid 3,000.1132 kg per hour to produce ethyl chloride 5,050.5051 kg per hour. Supporting utilities require 40,739.68049 kg per hour of water, 283.22 kW of electricity, and 2,949.43 liters per hour of fuel. To meet the water needs of the plant ethyl chloride is used water from the largest river water in that river Ciujung Cilegon. From the results of the economic analysis indicates Percent Return On Investment (ROI) before tax is amounted to 29.48% and Percent Return On Investment (ROI) after tax of 14.74%. Pay Out Time (POT) before tax for 2.5 years, while Pay Out Time (POT) after tax for 4.0 years. Break Even Point (BEP) is amounted to 44.81%, and Shut Down Point (SDP) is amounted to 28.29%. Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of 33%. Economic analysis of the data from this plant can be concluded that the ethanol plant of ethyl chloride and hydrochloric acid capacity of 40,000 tones per year is profitable and feasible to build.
