Abstract

This study is aimed at describing the design of the teaching, procedure of the teaching, and the strengths and the weaknesses of “Tutorial Method”. In achieving the objectives, the researcher uses naturalistic approach to collect and analyze the data based on interview and observation. The research was held in SPEC English Course at Sukoharjo. The writer gets the data of this research from events, informant, and document. The techniques of collecting data are observation, interview and document analysis. The result of the analysis shows that SPEC uses the combination of Audiolingual Method (ALM) and Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) in the “Tutorial Method”. Using the “Tutorial Method”, the teacher can make the students fluent in English both of oral and written, because the students are encouraged to talk in English from the first meeting, it does not matter if they do not master the grammatical structure or even have a mistake. The tutor gives feedback during the lesson. In the end of the course, the students must be able to speak fluently. The strength of the method is that the students can learn English easier because there are a lot of drillings and repetitions. They are always encouraged to talk, practicing the lesson using card, poster, quiz, English for fun or games. They make the students more interested in learning English. The weakness is that the teacher always gets bored because he/she always repeats the same method at the same time. Sometimes the students feel annoyed because the teacher seldom gives them appreciate or positive reinforcement.
