Abstract

This research is a classroom action research. The objectives of this research are to describe the implementation of teaching vocabulary using Visual Aids and to examine whether Visual Aids can improve the elementary school student’s vocabulary mastery or not. The study was carried the out in the fourth of SD Negeri Gumpang 2 Kartasura. There are two cycles of the action. The procedure of each cycle consists of identifying, planning, implementing, observing, reflecting and revising. The researcher holds teaching-learning process in six meetings and there are two meetings in each cycle. She supports the qualitative data by using the technique of observation, pupil diaries. She uses questioner and test to collect the quantitative one. The test in the form of pretest and post test. The result of this is research shows that: 1). The students’ vocabulary mastery is improved. Before cycle, the mastery of vocabulary of the students was still low. The score of the student before cycle in average is 5,6. In cycle I, the visual aids also increase the student’s motivation in joining the class. The score of the student improves to 7,28. The percentage of the students’ vocabulary mastery was 70%, and it belonged to the good category. In cycle II, the students are more focused to the material because it is a new material with picture and draw ing. The score of the student improves to 8,07. The percentage of the students’ vocabulary mastery was 80%, and it belonged to the very good category. The result of comparing the pre-test and post-test score is in Cycle I, the score of pre-test is 5,64 and the score of post-test is 7,28. In cycle II, the score of pre-test is 7,64 and the score of post-test is 8,07. From the phenomenon above it can be seen that teaching vocabulary using visual aids is significant to apply in the fourth year of SDN Gumpang 2 Kartasura because it can be proved from the score of the students before and after cycle.
