Abstract

The research was carried out in SMP Negeri 1 Karanganyar from 1-25 February 2008. The subject of the research was 20 students of the eighth year acceleration class. The aim of the research are to improve the students’ English writing recount text and to prove whether using writing hot news is able to improve the students’ English writing recount text. This action research was executed in three cycles. Each consisted of planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. And each cycle, the researcher implemented genre-based approach with four stages i.e. building knowledge on the field, modeling of the text, joint construction of the text, and independent construction of the text. The research findings of the first cycle, there were improvement between before cycle and cycle 1. Before cycle there were just 10% of the students who got score 85, while in the cycle 1, there were 25% of the students who got score 85. The teaching-learning process run attractively. In the first cycle, 50% of the students were passive in joining the class because they were still confused about lexicogrammatical features used in writing recount text. In cycle 2, there were 50% of the students who got score 85 and the teaching-learning process runs more interactively. They felt more comfort and enthusiastic during teaching-learning process. In cycle 3, there were significant improvement. There were 90% of the students who got score more than 85% and all of the students are active in joining teaching-learning process. For those reasons, the researcher’s hypothesis stating that through writing hot news is able to improve the students’ ability in writing recount text is accepted.
