Abstract

The objectives of the research are describing the implementation of role playing and retelling story in teaching speaking to the beginners at American English Course (AEC) in Gemolong Sragen, tutor’s problem in teaching and learning process, and student’s problem in teaching and learning process. The research was done in American English Course (AEC) in Gemolong Sragen. The writer took the students of elementary level (speaking class) of American English Course (AEC) in Gemolong Sragen as the subject of the study. This type of research is qualitative research. The technique of analyzing the data is descriptive. In this study, the writer uses two data source, namely primary and secondary data sources. Teaching speaking in the teacher AEC uses role playing and retelling story. Role playing is pair work. The objectives of teaching speaking using role playing are to develop the student’s creativity in playing a role (character), the student’s competence in vocabulary mastery, and to create good relationship to other friends or peers. While, the purpose of retelling story is to develop the student’s competence in vocabulary mastery, to comprehend the story, to develop their creativity to retell the story by their own words and develop their own imagination about the story. Retelling story is solo work task. The students do the task independently, based on their own competence. The problem faced by tutors is the student psychology that refers to bravery courage. The problems faced by the students are the student’s performance and readiness to the material. After collecting the data and analyzing them, it is known that teaching speaking using role playing and retelling story influences the students speaking mastery. The students are very enthusiastic in learning speaking, most of them have high motivation in joining the class and great part of the students participate to be active in front of the class. The conclusion is teaching speaking using role playing and retelling story is very effective.
