Abstract

In teaching English, reading comprehension is one of the ways to increase the student’s achievement. But when the students should do the reading test, the result is not satisfied. Besides, in English teaching learning process the students are not interested in reading and look very lazy to read the passage or to discuss the text. Knowing this reality, the writer wants to find out what actually hinders the students difficulty in reading comprehension. In conducting the study, the writer uses descriptive method. The subject of the study is 40 students of the second grade of MTs Negeri 2 Surakarta in the academic year of 2006/2007. The instruments used in collecting the data are observation, questionnaire, and interview. To analyze the data, the writer uses interactive method. From the student difficulty is found that factors causing reading difficulties are intelligence, vocabulary, grammar mastery and motivation. For each kinds of difficulties, is found that students major difficulty in reading comprehension is 82,5% caused by vocabulary, 60% caused by grammar mastery, 47,5% caused by motivation, and 25% caused by intelligence.
