Abstract

Background: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a syndrome resulting from the suppression of the median nerve in the carpal tunnel located in the wrist, when the median nerve that runs through the tunnel from the forearm to the hand. Results of some studies show a link between CTS with repetitive biomechanical movement of the wrist and hand. Conservative treatment for CTS handles in hospitals are often given an ultrasound, while LLLT rarely given in this case. Judging from some of the results of previouse research indicates effectiveness of LLLT for conservative treatment of CTS, because their biophysical effects on neural networks that can facilitate the median nerve tissue regeneration, and gives the reaction of actin filaments organization to achieve better results. Objective: This study was conducted to determine the differences effect between giving low level laser therapy and ultrasound therapy in reducing pain in cases of carpal tunnel syndrome. Methods: This was an experimental, tow-group pre test and post test design. Group A was given ultrasound therapy (1 MHz, 1,0 W/cm², pulse 1:4, 15mn/sesion) and group B was given low level laser therapy (9 joules, 850 nm laser 100mW, on a five point tenderness (1,8 joules/cm² per point)). With the VAS pain measurement tools, measurement before and after a course of therapy is completed. The study was conducted 3 times /week for 4 weeks. Result: Statistical analysis test on the effect of ultrasound group p<0,05 (p=0,012), low level laser therapy group p<0,05 (p=0,012), test results of the different effects between the two groups p>0,05 (p=0,268). Conclution: Providing both ultrasound therapy and low level laser therapy in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome can affect to reduce pain, but there was no significant difference in reducing pain in carpal tunnel syndrome.
