Abstract

Dissimilar welding of aluminum is an innovation used to increase the effectiveness and efficiency to make a product / component. That has been applied to the automotive industry, aerospace, and shipbuilding. Aluminum has bad weldability compared with the steel material because of the oxide layer appears on the surface of aluminum. The welding problems of aluminum can be overcome by using a solid state welding such as friction stir welding (FSW). The objectives of the study are to determine the strength of the welding joint and microstructure of dissimilar welding joint with different series of aluminum. It was conducted by using tensile testing in the weld direction of 0° and 45° to see the formability, hardness testing, and microstructure in friction stir welding. In this study, welding process is conducted to combine aluminum 1100 series (low strength aluminum) with aluminum 6061-T6 series (high strength aluminum) in the 2 mm thickness of aluminum sheet. The analysis is done by investigate comparison of the weld strength between dissimilar and similar aluminum series. The experiment results shows that the dissimilar weld types both weld angle orientation 0° and 45° has fracture location on the HAZ area of 1100 aluminum series. The maximum of tensile strength is 78,07 MPa and 75,26 MPa for weld angle orientation of 0° and 45° respectively. Weld angle orientation has significant effect to the strain where the welding direction 0° is 10,99% and the welding direction of 45° is 13,8%. Hardness test in the weld zone have fluctuation hardness value because of the material stiring is not homogen, whereas for the similar welding is more stable in the welding area. Microstructure investigation on the dissimilar aluminum welding has found a hook defects in the weld nugget. In the HAZ area, the grain size of 6061-T6 has increased while for 1100 material has decreased. It can be affected by the temperature and aluminum characteristic. Meanwhile, in weld nugget, the grain size has refined due to the stirring tool joint and heating during the welding process.
