Abstract

This research paper is intended to describe the implementation of teaching speaking by using role-play, its’ effectiveness, and the difficulties faced by the students in speaking using role-play. The research was implemented in SMA N I Karangnongko, Klaten using an action research. The researcher took 37 students of the second year as the subject of research. The data in this research are derived from event, human, and document analysis. The data are quoted from observation, test, document, and interview. The results of the research show that: (1) the implementation of teaching speaking using role-play can improve students’ achievement in English speaking (2) average result of the pre-test is 52, 63 , the average result of the first cycle is 59, 3, the result of second cycle is 60, 3, the result of third cycle is 65, 3 , and the average of post-test is 70, 3 (3) the difficulties of the students in speaking using role-play are pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, and shyness, and nervousness. Considering the result of the research, there is improvement on the students’ achievement in English speaking. It can be inferred that role-play is effective to improve students’ English speaking.
