Abstract

This research aims at describing the teaching English vocabulary process by using group work at the 7th year of SMP Negeri 7 Sukoharjo, and the problems faced by the English teacher. This research is a qualitative study. The data are taken from interview, observation and documents analysis. The subjects of the study are the English teacher and the students at the 7th year of SMP N 7 Sukoharjo. The object of the study is teaching English vocabulary process by using group work at the 7th year of SMP N 7 Sukoharjo. This study shows that the teaching English vocabulary process by using group work is to improve the vocabulary, and prepare the students to face the National Examination or Ujian Akhir National (UAN). The material of teaching taught by the teacher is the text book entitled Seize the Day. The procedures of classroom activity are: opening, explanation, consultation, practice, presentation, judgment, and closing the class. The teacher has several problems in teaching English: the class management, limited time, different capability of the student, and unstable motivation of the students.
