Abstract

This study is aimed at describing the improvement of the students’ pronunciation, its effectiveness, and students’ responses on the Hand Puppets Performance. The result of this study is expected to contribute the teaching learning English in elementary school. The study was implemented in SD N I Gebyog, Karanganyar using action research. The writer took 22 students of the fourth year students as the subject of research. The writer compared the result of pre test and three practices in Hand Puppets Performance to collect the required data and then made percentage of the students’ accuracy in pronouncing the words. There were 26 words that were given to the students and the average of the accuracy in pre test was 18 %. The result of the research show that: (1) the implementation of teaching pronunciation through Hand Puppets Performance could improve students’ motivation in pronouncing English words (2) average result of the first cycle was 79 % of students ‘pronunciation correctness, the average result of the second cycle was 80 %, and the average result of the third cycle was 86 % of students’ pronunciation correctness (3) the response of the students were good related to the implementation of this technique. Considering the result of the research, there is improvement on the percentage students’ pronunciation from the three cycles. It can be inferred that Hand Puppets Performance is effective to improve students’ pronunciation because the students can pronounce the words more accurately.
