Abstract

This research is aimed to describe the implementation of School-based Curriculum in teaching learning English to the fifth year students of SD Negeri Dukuhan Kerten. It focused on eight aspects, namely: (1) goal setting, (2) curriculum, (3) syllabus, (4) teacher’s role, (5) learner’s role, (6) the role of instructional material, (7) classroom activities, and (8) evaluation. This research is a descriptive qualitative study. The object of the study is the English teaching learning process at the fifth year of SD Negeri Dukuhan Kerten. The methods of collecting data of this research are: (1) observation, (2) interview, and (3) documentation. In analyzing the data, the writer uses an interactive model. It consists of three main components: (1) reducing of the data, (2) description of the data, and (3) conclusion and verification. The result of the study shows that the English teaching learning process to the fifth year at SD Negeri Dukuhan Kerten is appropriate with School-based Curriculum. The English teacher teaches the lesson based on the standard competency and basic competency. She teaches the four skills in the classroom context integrally. She uses various techniques: (1) song, (2) role play, (3) picture and (4) game. The problems faced by the English teacher in implementing School-based Curriculum are the teacher gets difficulty: (1) to create students’ ability in mastering the four skills, (2) to build the students’ memorization in memorizing the new vocabulary, (3) to handle naughty student, (4) in making questions for final test. The teacher’s solutions to the problems are: (1) the teacher creates natural atmosphere and teach the basic English four skills integrally, (2) the teacher uses song, picture and game to build the students’ memorization in memorizing the new vocabulary, (3) the teacher gives punishment and advises to the naughty student, and (4) the teacher asks questions depending on the standard competency and basic competency that was fixed by the committee of standard national education (Badan Standar Nasiaoanl Pendidikan)
