Abstract

This research paper is intended to describe (1) the implementation of teaching reading using jigsaw technique to the first year students of SMP Al Islam Kartasura, (2) the result of teaching reading using jigsaw to the first year students of SMP Al Islam Kartasura, (3) the strengths and the weaknesses of teaching reading using jigsaw to the first year students of SMP Al Islam Kartasura. This is a pre-experimental study.The subject of this research is 37 students of SMP Al Islam Kartasura, especially class IA. The object of the research is the students’ answers on written test in the form of pre-test and post-test. The data are the scores of pre-test and post-test. The construct validity is used to know the validity of items by using correlation product moment, then to know the reliability the writer uses Alpha Cronbach. The means t-test is used to analyze the data. The result of the analysis indicates that, tcalculate score of students pre test is 31,951 when ttable is 2,021 at the level of significance 5%, while in post test tcalculate score is 51,954 when ttable is 2,021 at the level of significance 5%. So tcalculate post test is more than tcalculate pre test or 51,954 more than 31,951. It means that there is significant difference between the students’ achievement of pre test and post test. The score of post-test is better than pre-test that means the teaching reading using jigsaw is successful to improve the students’ achievement. The conclusion drawn from this study is that teaching reading using Jigsaw technique of SMP Al Islam Kartasura yields good and effective result. There are some strengths that can be found in reading class: (1) the students have high interest in joining the teaching learning process, (2) the students are motivated to do the task and to perform in the class and (3) the students can improve their self-esteem. Besides there are also some weaknesses: (1) it needs more energy and time, (2) the students are not motivated to share the group’s work, and (3) it causes noise and not serious classroom to teaching reading using Jigsaw technique.
