Abstract

This study investigates the expanding words of Indonesian subtitling toward English utterances in The Last Samurai movie. The objectives of this study are to portray: the forms of expanding words in subtitling, basically in its types, the readability of the expanding words to be read by the viewers, and to describe the equivalence and non-equivalence between source language and target language of the movie. This is a descriptive qualitative research which takes a document oriented as the method of collecting data. By this method, the writer uses the The Last Samurai movie as the data source, and the data taken are Indonesian transliteration of the subtitling in the appearance of utterances. As the comparison, there is the manuscript of its original language, English. Based on that, the technique used to analyze is comparing-descriptive technique. The results of the research show that firstly, the types of the utterances come into 6 accounts; positive and negative declarative sentence, positive and negative interrogative sentence, positive imperative sentence, and the last is in positive exclamatory sentence. Secondly, there are the results of both readable and unreadable subtitles. The readable subtitles cover around 93, 75% whereas the rest of 6, 25% comes to unreadable. Lastly, 73, 75% is in the favor of equivalence subtitles and 26, 25% appears as the non-equivalence.
