Abstract

This study is aimed to describe the characteristics of slang and the lexical and contextual meaning of slang words used in Eminem’s songs. In collecting the data, the researcher uses documentation method by reading, selecting, and classifying the slang word found in Eminem’s song lyrics. The data are analyzed based on the characteristics of slang proposed by Whardhaugh. Besides, he applies Hasan and Halliday’s theory of context in order to get the contextual meaning of slang. The result of the study shows that there are four characteristics of slang in these songs. They are; 1) The sound in Black English is substituted by other sound, 2) Black English tends to use sequence no more than one final consonant sound, 3) The lack of sound in the initial, middle and final position of a word, it is subdivided into three: as contraction, shift of sound and spelling tendency, 4) Black English appears to leave off consonant sound in the end of a word. Through comparison between the lexical and contextual meaning of the words, it is found six different kinds of meaning. There are 3 real meaning of the word which is broader than the new meaning, 8 new meaning of the word which is broader than its real meaning, 4 real meaning and one new meaning of the word can share some features of meaning whereas some of them has different meaning, 4 real meaning and one new meaning of the word that could be identical to each other but used different field, 13 real meaning and one new meaning of the word that could be quite different, and 25 new meaning which does not have real meaning.
