Abstract

his study is aimed at finding the significance of the connection between reading and analyzing text to improve students’ writing skill. Both activities are as the parallel process of learning, which cannot be separated each other. The research was conducted in SMA PGRI 1 Sragen on August 20th to 29th, 2008. The sample of the research is the students of X-A class about 34 students of 136 students, the total population of the first year students at SMA PGRI 1 Sragen. The class is chosen by lottery. The data, are the score of students’ writing assignment by test as the technique of the research. In order to find the significance of the correlation of both reading and writing, the writer uses t-test formula to compute the data then consulted to the table of value to know the significant correlation of variables, reading and writing. From the data, which have been analyzed, the Mean of the first writing assignment, before the treatment applied, shows that they have a good proficiency in writing, especially in writing descriptive text. The result is 65,88. The Mean of the second writing assignment, after the treatment applied, shows that their proficiency in writing has increased, especially in writing descriptive text. The result is 75. Based on the result of the data analysis in this study, the result of t-test calculation (to) is 10,98 and the t-table is 2,02 with df: 34. From consulting to the significant 5%: 2,02, the writer concludes that variables of the study have significant correlation between reading and analyzing text and students’ writing skill. In addition, to (10,98) is bigger than t-table (2,02). It means that reading and analyzing text can improve students’ writing skill, the first year of SMA PGRI 1 Sragen, especially X-A class. Finally, the writer concludes that reading and analyzing text can improve students’ writing skill. In reading activity, students do not merely concern to the comprehension, but they get some advantages including enrich the vocabulary, learning sentences’ pattern and the tenses, and they can learn how to develop the paragraph. All of the advantages that are gotten in reading activity can be applied in writing activity.
