Abstract

This research studies about pragmatics of Indonesian political headline in newspaper. The objectives of the study are to describe the linguistics forms and the intention of the political headline, especially in Jakarta Post. The type of this research is descriptive qualitative research. In collecting the data, the writer uses observation and documentation method by selecting the political headline which can be found in Jakarta Post, especially in headlines news and national rubric. To achieve the objectives, the writer classifies the data based on sentence form, especially the types of the sentence and applies speech act theory and pragmatic context to describe the intention. The result of data analysis shows that there are two forms of linguistic, they are phrase and sentence. For the sentence, there are only two forms political headline, namely declarative and interrogative. Meanwhile the intentions of this study cover representative; informing (33, 34%), disagreeing (6, 67%), satiring (10%), worrying (6, 67%), and doubting (6,67%). In the directive form; criticizing (10%), insisting (6, 67%), rejecting (6, 67%), encouraging (3, 34%), suggesting (3,34%), and prohibiting (3,34%). At last, pledging (3, 34%) in the form of commissive. Key words: political headline, speech acts, pragmatics
