Abstract

The study investigates the loanword used in Solopos Newspaper. It aims to find: (1) the types of English loanword and (2) the linguistic form of English loanword focused on word formation. This research is descriptive qualitative research. The data are loanword words found in Solopos newspaper in Solopos reader’s column in the period of March 2008. The writer uses documentation in collecting the data. The data are analyzed based on their linguistic forms and the type of word formation of the loanword The result shows that there are two types of loanword: pure loanword and loan blend. Pure loanword consist of two categories; the word whose spelling and meaning are same and the word whose spelling is same but the meaning is different. The word whose spelling and meaning are same, consist of investor, stop, problem, total, video, non, play group, deadline, cover, big match, handicraft, radio, handphone, modern, final, normal, target, cash, rental, and order. The word whose spelling is same but meaning is different consist of gang and rocker. Loan blend consist of two categories based on the spelling and meaning: the word whose spelling almost the same and the meaning is same too (borrowing) and the word whose spelling is almost the same but the meaning is different (loan shift). Borrowing consist of kondisi, informasi, negative, aksi, demonstrasi, nasional, organisasi, konstitusi, dialog, televisi, proyek, bangkrut, produk, aktivitas, obyek, signifikan, identitas, komputer, trofi and toleransi. Loanshift consist of instansi. In addition, there is only one kind of word formation used in the loanword linguistic: affixation, it is consist of investor, normal, rental, proposal, and rocker.
