Abstract

This study is intended to find out whether there is a significant difference between students who are taught using Top-down Model and those who are taught using Bottom-up Model of reading and which one is more effective using Top-down Model or using Bottom-up Model in teaching reading. The method that is used in this research is experimental method. This research was conducted in July 2008. The population was all the second year student of SMP Negeri 2 Mojogedang in 2007/2008 academic year. The writer just took 80 students as the research samples by using purposive sampling, consisting of 40 students belonging to the Top-down Model (VIII A) and 40 students belonging Bottom-up Model (VIII C). Class VIII C is the control group, then the other is the experimental group. The research instrument used to collect the data in this study was test. The result of test given to these group were analyzed by using the t-test formula. After collecting and analyzing the data, the computation shows the t-obtained (to) is 3.393, consulting the t-table (78,0.05 = 1.66) the writer finds that to is higher than tt. It means that there is a significant difference between control and experimental group. Another result the writer finds is the difference of two groups mean. The group of students who are taught using Top-down model gets 45.825, while those taught using Bottom up model gets 44.875. It means that the Top-down model gives better result of teaching reading than Bottom-up especially for second year students of SMP Negeri 2 Mojogedang.
