Abstract

The research has two objectives : (1) to analyze the aspects of narrative structure in Dear Jan Love Ruth story, and (2) to analyze the linguistic elements to configure the narrative discourse in Dear Jan Love Ruth story. Considering these aims, the writer uses descriptive qualitative method. The data of the research are taken from the narrative text of Dear Jan Love Ruth story. The objects of the research are the aspects of narrative structure and the linguistic elements of discourse in Dear Jan Love Ruth story. The result of the research shows that all aspects of narrative structure, such as character and characterization, plot, point of view, setting and theme are found in Dear Jan Love Ruth story. But not all linguistic elements of narrative discourse are found. In subtitution there is only clausal subtitution that found. About reference, the writer only found personal and demonstrative reference. In lexical cohesion there is only synonymy that found in the story. The conclusion that can be taken from this study are the Dear Jan Love Ruth story covers all aspects of narrative structure, such as character and characterization, plot, point of view, theme and setting. Besides that, the inguistic elements that often appear in Dear Jan Love Ruth story are reference (especially personal reference) and conjunction and.
